Ice breakers are interesting ships. Like most, t he Yamal has a double hull with the outer layer being almost 2" thick where it contacts the ice. The space between the outer and inner hull is a ballast tank. I assume the incompressible nature of water allows it to essentally connect the inner and outer hulls so it acts like a much thicker hull.
I know on US breakers they use several high speed pumps to move water between ballast tanks. They can rapidly move water fore/aft and arthwartships to “rock” the vessel free should it become stuck or beached on particularly thick ice. I assume Yamal can do the same.
Curiously, i t’s also got 2x 171 MW reactors that require cold seawater injection temperatures to maintain reactor plant temperatures , meaning it can’t operating in the tropics.

At one point I was on a design team that was going to compete against this one . But I have to say, that looks like a good ship.
